QEM/HBCU-UP LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE (LDI) FOR STEM FACULTY

The Quality Education for Minorities (QEM) Network has received support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to offer an HBCU-UP Leadership Development Institute (LDI). The four-part Leadership Institute will focus on campuses that have multi-year projects supported through NSF's Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP). Support is being provided to conduct the LDI for a cohort of 30 assistant professors in STEM disciplines at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with HBCU-UP Implementation Awards.

The LDI is designed to: (1) enhance the leadership and research capabilities of STEM junior faculty from underrepresented groups at HBCUs; and (2) build a community of emerging leaders in STEM at HBCUs. Two-person teams participating in the four-part LDI will come from 15 HBCUs that have multi-year projects supported through HBCU-UP. Selected participants will, to the extent possible, come from different STEM departments.

COHORT I MEMBERS MEET IN WASHINGTON, DC– AUGUST 20009

The Institute schedule consists of four sessions conducted between August 2009 and August 2010: a five-day summer session; a two-day winter session; a ten-week summer research appointment at an NSF-supported research center (June-August, 2010); and a five-day summer session (Monday-Friday, August 2-6, 2010). Between sessions, ongoing communication will be facilitated through the project’s web-based electronic community. The first five-day summer session of the 2009-2010 HBCU-UP LDI was conducted on Monday-Friday, August 10-14, 2009, in Washington, DC. The two-day winter session will be conducted on Friday-Saturday, February 5-6, 2010, in Atlanta, GA.

The cohort of 30 assistant professors selected for the 2009-2010 Institute represent the following 20 HBCU-UP grantee institutions.

LDI graduates will be prepared and expected to take a leadership role in the design, promotion, and management of new STEM Projects for their campuses as well as provide enhanced support to the principal investigators and project directors of current HBCU-UP projects at their institutions. As part of the HBCU-UP LDI project, participants will develop individual STEM or STEM education research proposals for their institutions. The topics featured at the Institute sessions are designed to promote academic leadership among the participants.

The HBCU-UP LDI participants will be expected to share the knowledge and experience gained through the Institute with other faculty at their institutions and with colleagues beyond their campuses through presentations at professional meetings, use of the dedicated project website and listserv, and the promotion of campus efforts that combine STEM education and research. They will form the basis for a network of faculty leaders who will increase the number of students on their campuses who engage in STEM research and, thereby, increase the students’ preparation for graduate school or for successful entry into the Nation’s STEM workforce.

Participants will be in a better position to assist their institutions in securing external support for research, including for campus-based undergraduate research opportunities for students, and establishing/enhancing research collaborations with other universities. The HBCU-UP LDI graduates (Fellows) will provide a foundation for sustaining and strengthening the STEM infrastructure at HBCUs beyond the duration of the project.
