Innovation through Institutional Integration (I3)

OUTREACH AND INFORMATION WORKSHOPS ON THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION’S INNOVATION THROUGH INSTITUTIONAL INTEGRATION (I-CUBED) EFFORT

With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the QEM Network conducted a series of workshops in Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 focused on the NSF Innovation through Institutional Integration (I3) initiative. The overall goal of this QEM project is to increase, through regional workshops, the participating institutions’ knowledge and understanding of the Foundation’s I3 initiative and to broaden participation in the submission of I3 proposals. The workshops were designed to ensure that minority-serving institutions (MSIs) are more aware I3 and to offer assistance in the development of their ideas for I3 proposals. Institutions that previously submitted unsuccessful I3 proposals were especially encouraged to participate in the QEM workshops. Click here for Information on the workshops, including links to the agendas.

ABOUT I3 .......... .. See NSF'S frequently asked questions about I3

I3 awards are continuing grants of up to $250,000 per year for up to five years, for a total of $1.25 million, with funding for years four and five dependent on performance. For Fiscal Year 2010, I-cubed proposals are being solicited in nine EHR programs that advance I3 goals:

  – Centers of Research Excellence in Science and Technology (CREST)
  – Research on Gender in Science and Engineering (GSE)
  – Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP)
  – Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST)
  – Alliances for Broadening Participation in STEM: Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP)
  – Math and Science Partnership (MSP)
  – Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program (Noyce)
  – Research in Disabilities Education (RDE)
  – Tribal Colleges and Universities Program (TCUP)

The deadline for the submission of I3 proposals are common for all of these programs: April 7, 2010. Eligibility is limited to institutions of higher education (including two- and four-year colleges). If the proposal is exclusively for I3 STEM educational or related research, then all categories of proposers identified in the NSF Grant Proposal Guide are eligible to submit. Given the focus on institutional integration, an institution may submit only one proposal to the I3 competition for this deadline.

Full Proposal Deadline Date:  April 7, 2010

For Fiscal Year 2010, proposals are being solicited in nine EHR programs that advance the goals of the Innovation through Institutional Integration (I3) Initiative: CREST, GSE, HBCU-UP, ITEST, LSAMP, MSP, Noyce, RDE, and TCUP.

A team’s campus (alone or in combination with potential collaborators) must have at least three STEM projects that would be involved in the I3 initiative, at least one of which must be an NSF Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR)-supported STEM project (unless the proposed initiative is to focus solely on research).   See frequently asked questions about I3
