Community Outreach and Leadership Development

This QEM component focuses
on leadership development among college/university faculty and students
as well as among parents and youth, especially those residing in low-income
communities. With support from NSF and HHS, QEM offers science-
and health-focused internships that emphasize leadership development.
QEM, with NSF support, also is focusing on leadership
development among faculty at Tribal Colleges and Universities.
With support from
the National Science Foundation, QEM trained and offered support
over a four-year period to a core group of parents in ten low-income
communities nationwide to encourage them to become stronger participants
in the provision of quality science, mathematics, and technology
education for their children; resource individuals for and trainers
of other parents in their respective communities; and more informed
advocates of quality education in their local schools. Similar
parent training activities are underway in communities in Jacksonville/Duval
County, Florida.
