Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP) Biology–Mathematics Faculty Workshop, August 18-19, 2006, Atlanta, GA

April 21-22, 2006 BWI Workshop Participants
|
HBCU-UP multi-year grantee institutions in the Southeast are invited to send a three-person team (2 mathematics faculty and 1 Biology faculty) to a two-day workshop that the Quality Education for Minorities (QEM) Network is planning for faculty who teach mathematics and/or Biology at these institutions. The purpose of the workshop is to enhance the quality of Biology and Mathematics instruction as well as to improve student performance and interest in STEM fields at these institutions. The workshop will take place Friday and Saturday, August 18-19, 2006, at the Hilton Atlanta Airport hotel.
The Biology-Mathematics Workshop builds upon a Mathematics Workshop conducted in August 2004 (at Spelman College and the Atlanta Hilton Hotel) for faculty who teach mathematics at NSF/HBCU-UP grantee institutions. The Workshop also will benefit from three regional workshops for grantees in NSF’s Tribal Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (TCUP) conducted by QEM staff and consultants. Those workshops focused on content and pedagogical strategies in five areas: developmental mathematics, college algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, and applications of mathematics. QEM also conducted a Biology-Mathematics Workshop for Tribal College faculty based upon a recommendation by participants in the TCUP Mathematics Workshop Series as well as an April 2006 Biology-Mathematics Workshop for HBCU-UP grantees in the Washington Metro area.
Each eligible HBCU-UP grantee institution should complete the Workshop Registration Form for its three-person team (two mathematics faculty and one Biology faculty). We strongly suggest that, where possible, one of the mathematics faculty be an individual who participated in the Atlanta Mathematics workshop referenced above. This could greatly facilitate the sequencing of concepts discussed during the Atlanta Mathematics workshop to the benefit of students enrolled in introductory-level Biology.
Expected outcomes include the identification of: key concepts that should be covered in introductory-level Biology; mathematical applications in Biology; emerging fields linking Biology and mathematics; and projects/strategies designed to engage students at HBCU-UP institutions in research and in peer tutoring.
To facilitate our making travel and lodging arrangements, where needed, we ask that completed registration forms be sent to Shirley McBay via e-mail at smmcbay1@qem.org by Friday, July 21, or earlier, if at all possible.
If you would like further information about the workshop, please feel free to contact QEM Senior Associate
J. Arthur Jones (jajones@qem.org) or Shirley McBay at smmcbay1@qem.org. Either can be reached by telephone at 202/659-1818.
