QEM International Workshop on Mathematics Education

Setting a Collaborative Research Agenda:
Mathematics Education in Africa and the United States

July 31 - August 1, 2006 in Dakar, Senegal

In July 2006, QEM hosted an International Workshop in Dakar, Senegal entitled Setting a Collaborative Research Agenda: Mathematics Education in Africa and the United States.  In collaboration with the 2006 Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) and supported by the National Science Foundation and the John Templeton Foundation, the International Workshop focused on research in mathematics education and potential collaborations among researchers and educators in the United States and Africa. The workshop preceded the 2006 Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO), an annual mathematics competition for high school students from across Africa.

The goals of the Workshop were to:

(1) Provide a forum for the discussion of key issues in mathematics
education in countries across the African continent, along with a discussion
of potential strategies for the resolution of these issues based on actual
experiences and research findings in the United States and in Africa; and

(2) Help enable a more timely exchange of research-based knowledge and
awareness of “best practices” in mathematics education by strengthening the
communication links and information flow between United States education
researchers and mathematicians and their counterparts in Africa.

The Workshop brought together experienced mathematics education researchers and mathematicians from the United States with mathematicians, teachers, national-level administrators, and teacher educators from across the African continent to discuss identified issues in mathematics education and set an agenda for future collaborative research activity. This research will provide a broad framework for identifying and sharing strategies to improve mathematics education in the United States and Africa at all levels of education.

A key outcome of the Workshop is expected to be the formulation of a collaborative research agenda involving researchers from the United States and Africa and with the potential to provide a strong underpinning for future improvements in mathematics education across the African continent. The agenda-setting will involve the participation of practitioners (teachers and teacher educators) as well as mathematicians and researchers in mathematics education. Invited participants were asked to submit a one-page summary of work/research in which they are engaged that they considered relevant to the Workshop’s goals.
